With support from AT&T, students across Pennsylvania spent time this summer preparing for college and careers.
In Williamsport, 20 high-achieving, rising seniors from 20 high schools, 9 states and the District of Columbia this summer completed a 2-week residential enrichment program at Lycoming College designed to introduce first-generation students to the breadth of a liberal arts education and the vibrancy of campus life. Students attended presentations, workshops and field trips offered by members of the faculty, staff, alumni, current students and members of the business community.
In Western Pennsylvania, a contribution from AT&T helped All Star Code launch in the city, giving 18 Pittsburgh-area high school students the chance to participate in 6 weeks of rigorous computer science study, learning skills that will position them for acceptance to college and ultimately for careers in the tech industry. The program is designed to empower young men of color with the skills, networks, and mindsets they need to create new futures through technology. And, again this year, AT&T supported Learn & Earn, a 6-week summer job program for teens and young adults ages 14-21 in the Pittsburgh region. Participants had the opportunity to earn money, gain valuable work experience, and develop soft skills to help them become college and career ready.
And, in Philadelphia, aspiring playwrights in grades 7-12 spent a week exploring the ways technology intersects and influences playwriting and theatre-making thanks, in part, to a $5,000 contribution from AT&T to Philadelphia Young Playwrights.
During the Theatre and Technology Camp, participants went on field trips and wrote plays inspired by technology; learned and applied the methods of guest artists who are using technology in their own artistic practice; and experimented with technology on site at Young Playwrights to create an original piece of 21st century theatre, according to Lisa Nelson-Haynes, Executive Director of Philadelphia Young Playwrights.
